Character
The heir who does not want it
A person next in line to a title or a trade who would rather be anything else.
A fresh take. Let the heir find a version of the duty they could love, and not only a way to avoid it.
A scene to try. Show them in the cloak room of a palace, secretly mending a clock.
Setting
The cosy inn
A warm roadside place with a fire, a landlord, a cat and a table of travellers.
A fresh take. Let the inn have a history of strange guests, and let tonight's guest be one more.
A scene to try. Show a stranger arriving in the rain and being given soup before anyone asks a question.
How they fit
- Bring "the heir who does not want it" to "the cosy inn", where nothing is quite as they are used to.
How it works
- Choose a genre and how many tropes you want: one, two or three. Fanfiction is for stories about characters that already exist, so it includes alternate universes, and it never involves real people.
- Press Roll tropes, or R. The tool draws tropes that work together: never two of the same kind, never more than one alternate universe, and never a pair that cancel each other out.
- Read what each trope means, then the fresh take and the scene. With two or three, a short line on how they fit tells you where to start.
- Lock a trope you like to keep it while the others change, or reroll one on its own. Changing the genre or the number starts again, but keeps a locked trope that still belongs.
- Copy the roll with C, copy a link that opens these exact tropes, or save it as an image. Rolls from earlier in your visit are listed under the tool, and the whole library is written out below it.
Five kinds, six genres
A relationship trope says how people stand, a plot trope says what happens, a character trope names a kind of person, a setting names a place, and an alternate universe moves the cast to another world. Each trope belongs to one or more of six genres, and a roll only draws from the genre you choose.
What a trope is, and why it is not a bad word
A trope is a shape that readers have met before and recognise at once: two people forced to share a tent, a hero who would rather be at home, a locked room with a puzzle in it. Naming the shape does not make a story weaker. It tells the reader what kind of pleasure is on the way, and then the story is free to keep the promise in a way nobody has quite done.
The complaint about tropes is really a complaint about copies. A trope used on autopilot feels worn, because the writer has supplied only the name. A trope used with care feels like a gift, because the writer has supplied a reason, a person and a detail that belong to this story alone. That difference is what each entry in the library below tries to help with.
Using a trope well
Start with what the reader is hoping for. Someone who opens a book with a slow burn wants to wait, and wants the waiting to be rewarded, so a quick confession in chapter three breaks the deal. Someone who picks up a heist wants to see the plan and then see it go sideways. Work out the promise first, and every choice after that becomes easier.
Then change one thing. Keep the structure and alter a single ingredient: a different reason, a different person in the role, a different price. The fresh take under each trope is one way to do that. The scene to try is a quick test. If you can write it in half an hour and it surprises you, the trope has something for your story. If not, put it back and roll again.
Mixing two tropes, or three
Most stories that people love are two or three tropes laid on top of each other. A relationship trope tells you how people stand, a plot trope tells you what happens to them, and a setting tells you where. The roll takes one of each kind at most, because two of the same kind would be arguing over the same job in the story. Two relationship tropes, for example, both want to be what the pair is, and the page would have to choose.
A few pairs are kept apart on purpose. A story about two strangers meeting cannot also be about old friends, and a ship that is failing cannot also be a quiet station. Alternate universes are the other exception. They already carry their own world, so they are never rolled beside a setting. Whatever you get, read the line on how the tropes fit as a starting point, and ignore it if your own idea is better.
Romance, kept sweet
The romance tropes here are the gentle ones: the meeting, the near miss, the misunderstanding, the gesture. Nothing in the romance library is steamy or violent, and the dark end of the genre is not offered. That is a choice, made so that the tool is safe for young writers and for anyone who writes at school or in a shared room.
Sweet does not have to mean thin. Some of the best love stories are built on small things done well: a shared umbrella, a note in a coat, a promise to bring soup. If a romance roll feels too light, add weight from another kind of trope. A fantasy court or a mystery in a small town gives two people something to do together, which is where most love stories begin.
Tropes in fanfiction, and alternate universes
Fanfiction has its own shapes, because it starts from a story the readers already know. A missing scene fills a gap. A fix-it story puts right something that hurt. A canon divergence changes one moment and follows what happens. The library lists these beside the usual tropes, with the same fresh take and scene for each. It is meant for fictional characters only. Nothing here is written about, or suited to, real people.
An alternate universe, or AU, moves the characters somewhere else: a cafe, a spaceship, a boarding school, a fairy tale. The art of a good AU is to keep what makes the characters themselves and change everything around them, so a reader says that is exactly what she would do in a bakery. Because an AU brings its own place, this tool never rolls one together with a setting.
Where the entries come from
The names are common phrases. Writers, readers and reviewers have used them for years, and nobody owns them. Everything under each name, the definition, the fresh take and the scene, was written for this page by a person. None of it is copied from a wiki, a list or another website, and none of it is generated.
The library grows. Links to a roll record where each trope sits in the list, and new entries are added to the end, so a link you saved last month will open the same tropes next year. That is also why the order cannot be tidied: a list that is alphabetical today would break every link tomorrow.
The trope library
All 187 tropes, grouped by kind, each with what it means. Open one for a fresh take and a scene to try. The genre next to a name says where the tool offers it: romance, fantasy, fanfiction, sci-fi, mystery, horror.

Questions
- Is the Trope Generator free, and does it use AI?
- Free, and nothing in it is AI. The tropes are in a library written by hand, and the roll is made on your device, with no account and nothing sent to us.
- Can I use these tropes in a published book?
- Yes. A trope is a shape that anyone may use, and the wording of the library is ours to share. Roll a trope, change it as you like and publish what you write. There is nothing to credit.
- Why are some pairs of tropes never rolled together?
- A roll never holds two tropes of the same kind, because they would compete for one job in the story. A few pairs that contradict each other are kept apart as well, such as a first meeting and a long friendship. Alternate universes are never rolled beside a setting.
- Is there dark romance or adult content?
- No. The romance in this library is sweet and safe for work, and nothing in the other genres is gory or graphic. The tropes are written to suit teenage writers.
- Does the fanfiction setting use real people?
- No. It is made for fictional characters, from books, shows, games and your own worlds. Stories about real people are not covered, and no entry in the library refers to one.
- How do I keep a roll I like?
- Press C to copy the tropes as text, use the link button for an address that opens the same roll, or save it as an image. Earlier rolls from this visit are listed under the tool until you leave the page.
